EPA says anti-farming billboard NOT its intent

An EPA official says it was not the agency’s intention to fund an anti-farmer billboard that has caused concern all the way up to Capitol Hill.

The billboards in part of Washington State were paid for with part of an EPA grant given to the Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission for salmon recovery. The commission then sub-awarded some of the money to an Indian tribe which launched the campaign.

Ron Carleton, EPA’s ag liaison, says Administrator McCarthy was distressed by what happened and the anti-cattle producer message on the billboards,
“That is absolutely not something we support. It’s absolutely not the message that we want to get out there.”

Carleton tells farm broadcasters that the EPA immediately asked for the campaign to cease and he says the billboards have come down. He says the agency is reviewing the process but admits damage has been done, “We take one step forward where we think we’re helping to build trust or trying to work with our agricultural stakeholders. And something like this happens and it’s like two steps back.”
