Legislation could help boost ag exports to Cuba

Bipartisan legislation that would help agriculture exporters sell products in Cuba is getting attention again.  Last month the Obama administration loosened export restrictions on companies selling non-agricultural products to Cuba on credit, however restrictions on agricultural products, which require all transactions be advance cash payments, have not been lifted.

North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp is urging the Senate to pass her bill, the Agricultural Export Expansion Act of 2015 that would lift the ban on private banks and companies offering financing for the export of agricultural goods to Cuba.  She says the crops grown in her state are in high demand in Cuba and it is critical that farmers in North Dakota have access to that market.

Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly says as Cuba begins to move towards a more free and open society, he supports policies that ensure Indiana farmers also have access to the Cuban market.

Heitkamp and Donnelly are among 14 Senators cosponsoring the bipartisan bill.
