High school and college students have until January 8th to apply for the Michigan Dairy Ambassador Scholarship and Leadership Program.  Each year a junior and senior ambassador is chosen at the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference in February.

The top applicants will receive media training during interviews and serve as an ambassador at community and statewide events. 2015 Senior Dairy Ambassador Natalie Horning from Southeast Michigan tells Brownfield the training helped her promote dairy through social media.

“The media training has really helped me with what sort of things you want to say and how you want to word it so you best connect with the public.”

She says while serving as an ambassador she was able to promote the industry at several events including Dairy Day at the Capitol, 4-H Dairy Days and Breakfast on the Farm. Horning, a junior at Michigan State University, grew up on a medium sized dairy farm in Manchester and has been active in 4-H and dairy judging.  Madeline Meyer, a senior at Ionia High School, has served the past year as the junior ambassador.

The senior ambassador will receive a $1,500 scholarship and the junior winner is awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Applicants are not required to have a farm background, but must be interested in a career in the dairy industry.
