Weather

Still mild, but wetter across the Heartland

The complex interaction between a cold front, tropical moisture originating over the Gulf of Mexico, and Tropical Storm Joaquin will maintain wet conditions in the eastern U.S. Five-day rainfall totals could reach 2 to 6 inches in the middle and northern Atlantic States, even though the center of Joaquin’s circulation should remain offshore. Dry weather will prevail in most other areas of the country, except for late-week precipitation (locally an inch or more) in the Rockies and High Plains. Toward week’s end, a significant push of cool air will engulf much of the central and eastern U.S. During the weekend and early next week, frost and freezes can be expected across parts of the northern Plains and upper Midwest.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of above-normal temperatures across much of the western, southern, and eastern U.S., while cooler-than-normal conditions will be limited to the northern Plains and middle and upper Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile, near- to above-normal precipitation across most of the country will contrast with drier-than-normal weather in the southern Atlantic States and the Pacific Northwest
