Home heating oil industry using biodiesel to revive and reinvent itself

Paul Lazzaro

The heating oil market is well established along the East Coast with approximately 6.2 million homes relying on it during the winter. But progressive states in that region are looking to move towards renewable fuels and have issued mandates in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Bioheat is traditional home heating oil blended with biodiesel that Paul Lazzarro, National Biodiesel Board liaison, says makes sense on the eastern seaboard.

“(Bioheat) creates jobs, compliments domestic crude sources, strengthens energy security and the biggest (advantage) is that it’s available now.  This is not reading a magazine asking when it’s going to be available on the market; it’s here now.”

Lazzarro, who lives in New York, says there is no plan B.

“Back home we say, if not bioheat, then what?  There is no backup plan for oil heat.  Oil heat resurrected itself on the backbone of biodiesel.”

Obstacles remain, such as transportation and infrastructure. But as the Renewable Fuels Standard calls for biodiesel growth in the coming years, bioheat offers a large market and annual demand.

  • I have heard a little about biodiesel before, but not a blend with heating oil! My husband and I are trying to use cleaner keygen sources for our house, so this sounds like a step in the right direction. Can we use this blend with our regular heater, or will we have to get a special heater?
