Heat expands across the upper Midwest
Across the Corn Belt, hot weather is expanding into the upper Midwest, where Friday’s high temperatures will approach 95°. Meanwhile, scattered showers dot the central Corn Belt. From March 30 – August 9, Missouri had the fewest days suitable for fieldwork (55.8 of out 133 possible days).
On the Plains, mostly dry weather accompanies near or above-normal temperatures. The hottest weather, relative to normal, is occurring on the northern High Plains, where today’s high temperatures will exceed 100° in some locations. The northern Plains’ heat favors spring wheat harvesting and other fieldwork.
In the South, significant shower activity is confined to Florida. Meanwhile, hot weather persists across the Deep South, although temperatures have fallen slightly. From eastern Texas to the Carolinas, the extended period of heat and dryness has depleted topsoil moisture and stressed pastures and immature summer crops.
In the West, wildfire ignition and expansion are a significant threat from the Great Basin to the northern Rockies due to lightning strikes and hot, dry, breezy weather. Hot, mostly dry weather also prevails in other areas, except for cooler conditions and a few showers in the Pacific Northwest.
