NFU’s opposition to TPP continues
The National Farmers Union (NFU) continues to oppose the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement.
NFU’s Chandler Goule says free trade agreements, such as TPP, have not worked.
“Last September, the United States was at a 505 billion dollars trade deficit since we started signing free trade agreements,” Goule says.
The emphasis should be on “fair trade”, not “free trade”, Goule says.
“We need to change the way we approach these agreements. We need to stop looking at them as a free trade agreement and to really start working on ‘this trade agreement needs to bring the United States out of its trade deficit—and to benefit the other countries that are participating’,” he says.
The latest round of TPP talks in Hawaii concluded without agreement on several key issues.
