Wisconsin sweets & treats

Alice Tayanna 7-20-15

Wisconsin’s Alice in Dairyland Teyanna Loether is travelling the state this month talking about sweets & treats.  Honey, maple syrup and ice cream.

Wisconsin has 35 ice cream plants producing 19 million gallons per year.  Loether says the best way to make sure it is Wisconsin ice cream is to look the Wisconsin Dairy logo.  That guarantees the majority of the dairy in the ice cream is from America’s Dairyland.  Some ice cream makers like Sassy Cow Creamery in Columbus are right on the farm where one can watch the milk go from the cow to the cone.

Wisconsin is also home to 53,000 honey-producing bee colonies.  Loether says one of the unique qualities of honey is the flavor is dependent upon the pollen being collected by the bees.  It may be clover, buckwheat or others.  She says beekeeping is a growing trend in larger cities and cites Mad Urban Bees with 80 hives in Madison and Middleton as an example.

Another sweet treat from Wisconsin is maple syrup made by more than 3,000 sugar bushes in the state.  The Badger State produced 215,000 gallons this spring ranking fourth in the nation.  The all-natural sweetener enjoys a long tradition in Wisconsin.
