Grower groups want GMO labeling bill passed

The National Corn Growers Association and the American Soybean Association are both calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to pass legislation to establish voluntary GMO labeling.  Legislation approved by the House Agriculture Committee Tuesday provides for labeling GMO-free foods, as well as foods containing biotechnology.  American Soybean Association President Wade Cowan of Texas says the bill sets science-based standards for labeling and provides consumers with the information they want on product labels.

Ohio farmer John Linder, who chairs the National Corn Growers Trade Policy and Biotechnology Action Team, says the bill will help avoid what he calls an unworkable patchwork of state GMO labeling mandates.  The bill was introduced by Representatives Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) and by G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.).  The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act is cosponsored by 69 Democrats and Republicans.
