Excess rains ahead for parts of the southern Plains, Midwest

Late Tuesday morning, Tropical Storm Bill will cross the Texas coast, bearing gusty winds and an increasing threat of flooding rains. On its expected path from eastern Texas into the middle Mississippi Valley, “Bill” could drop at least 4 to 8 inches of rain—and trigger widespread flooding—in areas where rivers are still running high in the wake of May downpours. Toward week’s end, locally heavy rain will spread as far east as the central Appalachians and the Mid-Atlantic States. Late-week rainfall could also become locally heavy in the upper Midwest, where 1- to 3-inch totals can be expected. Elsewhere, hot, mostly dry weather will persist through week’s end across much of the West and Southeast.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of near- to above normal temperatures nationwide, except for cooler-than-normal conditions from North Dakota to Maine. Meanwhile, below-normal rainfall in the Northwest and Southeast will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather in parts of the Southwest and from the Midwest into the Northeast.
