Frost damage reported in Michigan’s Thumb
Corn farmers in Michigan’s Thumb are reporting frost damage from earlier this week. Jim Zook, Executive Director of Michigan Corn, says Sunday and Monday had overnight lows that resulted in some tip damage.
“It seemed like the larger corn maybe actually suffered a little bit more frost because it wasn’t as close to the soil that was providing radiant heat to the plants.” He tells Brownfield smaller plants that were more recently planted seemed to be more protected from damage.
Zook says some areas in Michigan do have excessive water standing, but he says he expects the crop to grow out of both potential issues.
“We get this heat like were going to have, it’s going to grow out of it just fine.”
Temperatures are forecasted into the 70s and 80s into the weekend with no precipitation.
