Seed treatments on early planted crops

Planting 2015 (2)

Seed treatments can help early planted crops fight soil pathogens.  Jack Lemmerman, Account Manager for DuPont Pioneer in Southwest Michigan, says they allow the seed to germinate and emerge uniformly.  He says the type of treatment depends on what’s being planted and the farmer’s cropping practices.

“It really depends on his cultural practices from the past, whether he’s no-till, whether he’s continuous corn, whether he’s in a rotation, so it really comes down to an individual situation for that individual farmer.”

Lemmerman says planting a good seed bed and uniform emergence will also help increase yields.

“Anytime we would have a seed that would emerge two to three days later than its neighbor, that plant will eventually be a weed in that field competing with the other plants for nutrients and moisture.”

He says preventing sidewall and overall compaction will also help with emergence.
