A brief break in severe weather on the Plains

Across the Corn Belt, cool conditions across the upper Midwest contrast with warm weather in the Ohio Valley. Near the boundary between cool and warm air, showers stretch from Michigan to Missouri. In the eastern Corn Belt, where fieldwork had been previously delayed, producers are planting ahead of anticipated rainfall.

On the Plains, mostly dry weather temporarily prevails between storms. Thursday’s severe weather outbreak, although less widespread than the May 6 event, resulted in localized wind and hail damage on the central and southern Plains. Meanwhile, cool, dry weather covers the northern Plains in the wake of beneficial rainfall.

In the South, showers and thunderstorms are affecting areas west of the Mississippi River. Meanwhile, warm, dry weather is promoting a rapid pace of fieldwork in the Southeast, except in the coastal Carolinas. Early Friday morning, Subtropical Storm Ana was stationary, located 170 south-southeast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

In the West, unsettled, showery weather prevails from central and southern California to the central Rockies.  The showers are boosting topsoil moisture and easing irrigation demands, but providing little relief from long-term, hydrological drought. Cool weather prevails, except for a return to warmth in the Pacific Northwest.
