Fruit damage possible in Michigan

Planting in Michigan is well behind normal due to colder temperatures, and snow and rain events last week. As of April 26, USDA reports farmers planted 4 percent of corn, 9 percent of barley, 24 percent of oats and 42 percent of sugarbeets. The winter wheat crop is reported 58 percent good to excellent. Michigan top soil moisture is 98 percent adequate to surplus.

Fruit growers are concerned about potential damage to buds from last week’s sub-freezing temperatures. Significant winter damage was reported in peaches, less damage is being seen in tart cherries, European plums and some varieties of grapes. Continued growth was reported in most Michigan fruits.
