Corn planting window still open

HaroldWatters_webAn Extension field agronomist at Ohio State University says there’s still time to get the 2015 corn crop planted.

Harold Watters says that now is what many consider to be the best time to plant corn.

“I like April 20 as a start date for planting corn,” Watters said. “The stuff that went in before this is not going to come up any earlier than stuff we plant now, so to me this is the start of the window and we’ve got about three weeks here when we can manage to make 100% of our yield, nothing is hurting us yet.”

Watters says there are farmers who are becoming a little antsy because very little spring fieldwork has been done.

As of Sunday, April 19, corn planting was one percent complete in Ohio and nine percent complete across the country.
