Franken calls poultry restrictions “bogus”

The USA Poultry and Egg Export Council estimates between 30 and 40 countries have imposed restrictions on U.S. poultry because of the avian influenza outbreak.

Minnesota Senator Al Franken calls these boycotts bogus, saying “I think these boycotts of products are really bogus.  They should know that we (U.S.) would not be exporting anything that has this virus.”

Franken tells Brownfield he’s seen these tactics before, “I don’t know if that’s done to create some kind of leverage or something like that.  I’ve seen this before with pigs.  To me it’s posturing.”

Minnesota is the nation’s number one turkey producing state with total U.S. export value over $678.5 million as of 2012 according to USDA.
