Short-term drier spell for parts of the Midwest

Across the Corn Belt, showers linger over the Ohio Valley, but drier weather dominates the middle Mississippi Valley, where Thursday daytime highs are expected to reach 70° as far north as Minnesota.

On the Plains, showers have moved into central and southern farming areas, providing timely moisture for wheat and emerging summer crops. Some of the storms in the south could become severe. Meanwhile, drier conditions continue in the north, supporting rapid spring wheat planting.

In the South, heavy rain continues along the Gulf Coast, with amounts likely to exceed 1 inch Thursday from Texas to the Florida Panhandle. Scattered, generally light showers are possible elsewhere from the Delta to the Atlantic Coast.

In the West, rain and snow showers are expected throughout the day in the central Rockies, with Winter Storm Advisories in Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. Frost Warnings were in effect in other parts of the West, but warmer conditions are developing in southern and central California.
