More wet weather from the southern Plains, northeastward

Looking ahead, rainy weather will overspread the Southeast over the next few days, worsening problems with excessive wetness. Meanwhile, a second storm system bringing rain and snow showers to the Rockies will advance eastward, promising to bring much-needed moisture to portions of the southern High Plains by week’s end. However, that system will bring additional heavy rain to Southeast; rainfall in excess of 4 inches will be possible from Louisiana to North Carolina from the combined effects of both systems. In contrast, mostly dry weather will continue on the northern Plains, sustaining a rapid rate of spring wheat harvesting. Dry weather will also persist in California for the foreseeable future, with above-normal temperatures maintaining high irrigation requirements of newly-sown cotton and rice.

The 6- to 10-day outlook calls for wetter-than-normal conditions east of the Mississippi and in portions of the southern Plains. Drier conditions are expected from the Pacific Coast to the northern Rockies. Warm weather is forecast to accompany the western dryness, and above-normal temperatures are also forecast in the vicinity of Florida. In contrast, cooler conditions are expected in the Nation’s mid-section.
