Chengdu is China’s fourth largest city
The first two days of the Iowa Soybean Association trade mission were spent in and around Chengdu, China.
Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan Province in southwestern China. Exact population numbers are hard to find, but according to the ChinaHighlights.com website, there are nearly seven million people in the main metro area with another seven million living in the area immediately surrounding the city. The total population of 14 million makes it’s the fourth largest city in China behind Chongqing (29 million), Shanghai (23 million) and Beijing (20 million).
Agriculture in the Sichuan Province consists of hogs, ducks and fish, with rapeseed grown in the winter and rice in the summer. However, rapid urbanization has greatly reduced the amount of land available for farming.
As with many Chinese cities, Chengdu is an interesting mix of old and new. However, the main metro area is very modern with considerable construction taking place. Traffic jams are common throughout the day.
Chengdu’s population in 2013 is 11.87 million according to China government statistics website, here is the link http://data.stats.gov.cn/workspace/index?a=q&type=global&dbcode=csnd&m=csnd&dimension=zb&code=A0201®ion=510100&time=2013,2013
