Local flooding in parts of the eastern, southern Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, mild weather continues to melt snow in the lower Great Lakes region. Farther south, locally heavy rain is pushing into the mid-Mississippi and lower Ohio Valleys., where some lowland flooding is occurring. Meanwhile, very warm weather covers the southwestern Corn Belt.

On the Plains, warm, dry weather prevails. Concerns with respect to soil moisture shortages persist in Oklahoma and environs. On March 8, Oklahoma’s topsoil moisture was rated 53% very short to short, while subsoil moisture was 71% very short to short.

In the South, the threat of flash flooding and lowland flooding persists from the central Gulf Coast northward through the Mississippi Delta. However, warm, dry weather continues to promote fieldwork in Florida.

In the West, warm, dry weather continues to promote fieldwork and crop growth, including development of California’s fruit, nut, and vine crops. However, warmth is also boosting irrigation demands and causing some premature melting of mountain snowpack.
