A milder pattern ahead for the Heartland

Areas of the South and East affected by the recent snow storm will continue to dig out Friday under mostly sunny but cold conditions. In fact, dry weather will prevail nearly nationwide during the next few days, except for some snow showers in the Great Lakes and Northeastern States and some rain showers in the western Gulf Coast region. Early next week, rain will spread across much of the remainder of the South, where 5-day totals could reach 1 to 3 inches. In contrast, dry weather will persist in drought-stricken California and elsewhere in the western and central U.S. Dry weather in the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys should allow residual flooding to subside, except on main-stem rivers.

Looking ahead, the 6-10 day outlook calls for near- to above-normal temperatures Nation-wide, except for cooler-than-normal conditions in central and southern Texas. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation from the central Plains into the Northeast will contrast with wetter-than-normal weather in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation’s southern tier from the Four Corners region into the Southeast.
