FDA survey finds few residues in milk

MilkThe Food and Drug Administration has tested milk at nearly 2-thousand dairy farms in the U.S. and has found FEW drug residues in the milk. More than 99 percent of the samples had no “drug residues of concern.”

The FDA says it tested samples from a targeted list of farms where dairy cow tissue had previously tested positive for drug residues. It also tested a “control” group.  The occurrence of drug residues in milk from cows in both groups, the FDA says, “was very low.”

Plus, the FDA says, the residues detected were from “drugs not included in routine testing under the current milk safety program.”

The FDA says it’s taking more steps to ensure milk safety by updating the current milk safety program to include testing for more drugs and to educate dairy producers “on best practices to avoid drug residues in both tissues and milk.”
