Cold pattern to continue across the Midwest

During the next several days, a rich flow of Pacific moisture will arrive along the West Coast. Heavy precipitation will develop in northwestern California and the Pacific Northwest on Thursday. During the weekend, precipitation may spread as far south as central California, followed by a return to drier weather along the Pacific Coast early next week. Five-day precipitation totals could reach 4 to 12 inches, with isolated amounts near 16 inches, in northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Totals of 2 to 6 inches can be expected in the northern Rockies. However, above-normal temperatures will accompany much of the Western precipitation, resulting in the potential for flooding, as well as limited snow accumulations except on the highest peaks. Elsewhere, mostly dry weather will prevail, except for periods of snow in the Midwestern and Northeastern States.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for the likelihood of warmer-than-normal weather west of the Mississippi River, while near- to below-normal temperatures will cover the eastern U.S. Meanwhile, drier-than-normal conditions across much of the southern half of the nation will contrast with above-normal precipitation from the Pacific Northwest to the upper Great Lakes region, and from the mid-Atlantic Coast into southern New England.
