Cheese production up for the month and year

Cheese Cheese production in the United States totaled 1 billion pounds in December, 2.5 percent above December of 2013. Italian type cheese production was up 4.2 percent from a year ago at 444 million pounds and American type cheese production was 1.5 percent higher at 387 million pounds.

Wisconsin produced 251 million pounds of cheese in December up 1.3 percent from a year ago. American type cheese production was 74.8 million pounds up 7.1 percent with cheddar up 9.1 percent at 50.7 million pounds.  Total Italian type cheese production was 127.5 million pounds up 2 percent from December of 2013.

California total cheese production in December was 211 million pounds up 2.5 percent from a year ago. American type cheese production in the Golden State totaled 51.3 million pounds down 7.6 percent from a year ago with cheddar output down 7.2 percent at 30.8 million pounds.  Total Italian type cheese production was 140 million pounds up 7.1 percent from December of 2013.

Butter production totaled 167 million pounds in December up 3.3 percent from a year earlier.

Other dairy product production in December compared to a year ago:

  •             Nonfat dry milk; 163 million pounds (+29.9%)
  •             Skim milk powder; 43.2 million pounds (-25.7%)
  •             Dry whey; 76 million pounds (-9.9%)
  •             Lactose; 91.6 million pounds (-1.1%)
  •             Whey protein concentrate; 47.3 million pounds (+1.6%)
  •             Regular ice cream; 51.3 million gallons (+18.1%)
  •             Lowfat ice cream; 26 million gallons (+15.3%)
  •             Sherbet; 2.51 million gallons (+15.3%)
  •             Frozen yogurt; 3.81 million gallons (-20.4%)

 

Total cheese production for the year 2014 was 11.4 billion pounds up 2.8 percent from 2013. Italian type cheese production totaled 4.9 billion pounds up 4.9 percent from 2013.  American type cheese production was up 1.9 percent from the previous year at 4.5 billion pounds.  Cheddar output was 1.9 percent higher at 3.2 billion pounds for the year.
