Wide-range of temperatures across the Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, warmth is pushing eastward, although chilly conditions linger across the middle Ohio Valley and the lower Great Lakes region. Wednesday’s high temperatures could reach 70° in western Missouri.

On the Plains, record-setting warmth continues to leave winter wheat devoid of a protective snow cover. On Tuesday, high temperatures in Kansas soared to 83° in Russell and Hill City. On the southern High Plains, very warm, dry weather is stressing winter wheat but promoting final cotton harvest efforts. By January 25, the Texas cotton harvest was 97% complete.

In the South, cool weather persists in the southern Atlantic States, but warmth has spread as far east as the Mississippi Delta. In the western Gulf Coast region, warm, dry weather favors pre-planting fieldwork.

In the West, isolated rain and snow showers dot the northern Intermountain region. Elsewhere, mild, dry weather prevails. Spring and summer water-supply prospects are becoming increasingly bleak in California and the Great Basin due to an extended mid-winter dry spell and meager high-elevation snowpack.
