Getting bigger yields for farmers

MH_Seed

Seed companies use replicated testing to find hybrids with the best yield potential and bring them to market.  In addition to the typical testing, Matt Hutcheson with Seed Consultants told attendees at Seed Consultant’s Winter Meeting in Noblesville they’re also testing different foliar products to look for added yield.  “We’re looking at different sugar products and growth regulators and Cobra applications to soybeans and we’ve also taken a closer look at foliar fungicide applications,” he says.

And, with lower commodity prices, he tells Brownfield big yields become more important.  “When we can find a product that actually works it is beneficial to growers,” he says.  “Some of the products we have been using cost as little as 55 cents or $1.00 an acre.  So if farmers are seeing a couple of bushel yield bump – we think it’s a big help.”

As margins become tighter, Hutcheson says products will not only need to pay for themselves, but provided additional yield to growers.
