The push for more organic milk producers
Packaged fluid milk sales in November totaled 4.2 billion pounds down 6 percent from November of 2013. Conventional milk sales were down 6.5 percent while organic milk sales were up 4.2 percent in November compared to a year ago.
Total organic milk product sales in October were 215 million pounds up 10.7 percent from September and up 10 percent year-to-date. USDA Ag Market News reports organic whole milk sales in October totaled 68 million pounds up 21 percent from a year ago. Organic reduced fat milk sales were 56 million pounds in October, down 5 percent from a year ago. Year-to-date organic reduced fat milk sales are up nearly 14 percent and organic whole milk sales for January-through-October are nearly 21 percent above the same period in 2013.
The U.S. weighted average advertised price of a half-gallon of organic milk was $3.56 last week, down 9 cents from the previous week but 9 cents above a year ago. The average price for a half-gallon of conventional milk was $2.37 up 34 cents from the previous week. That puts the organic-to-conventional spread at $1.19 down 43 cents from the previous week.
The demand for organic milk is pushing prices higher. USDA Ag Market News Service says national accounts are offering contract pricing averaging $36.80 per hundredweight before trucking and regional accounts are offering $36.30 with free trucking. Some organic grazers are being offered $40.38 in New England.
