Temperatures moderating in the western Corn Belt

Across the Corn Belt, chilly weather and a few snow showers linger in the Great Lakes region. In contrast, mild air is spreading across areas west of the Mississippi River. Most of the Midwest—except the southern tier of the Corn Belt—remains covered by snow, helping to provide insulation for winter wheat in the lower Great Lakes region.

On the Plains, mild weather has begun to erode winter wheat’s protective snow cover across northern production areas. In Montana, windy conditions are accelerating the rate of snow loss.

In the South, a few rain showers—associated with a cold front’s passage—linger across southern Florida. Elsewhere, cool, dry weather prevails, following the latest round of precipitation.

In the West, rain and snow showers stretch from the Pacific Northwest to the northern Rockies. Precipitation that is falling in northern California is generally light and not resulting in much moisture in key watershed areas of the Sierra Nevada. Elsewhere in the West, dry weather and above-normal temperatures prevail.
