Third strain of PEDv confirmed

A third ‘naturally-occurring’ strain* of the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus in pigs has been identified. The University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Lab discovered the strain. It was confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, and announced last week, on December 31st, 2014. Since the initial PEDV strain was identified in the U.S. in the spring of 2013, an estimated 8-million pigs, mostly piglets, have died from the disease.
