Weed survey

Ohio State University Extension weed specialist Mark Loux (3)

Based on information collected for the latest weed survey by Ohio State University Extension educators and a group in the weed science department at Ohio State, the major weeds in Ohio remain marestail and giant ragweed.

Extension weed specialist, Mark Loux, says overall, farmers are making progress when it comes to controlling weeds in the state.

“Lambs Quarter was one we used to pick up five, six years ago and as our use of residual herbicides in beans has increased that’s sort of dropped off, volunteer corn is kind of variable, common ragweed is variable, I would say we are making a little progress on giant ragweed,” Loux said. “But what we know about giant ragweed is that the five or so percent of the fields that have a moderate to severe infestation are resistant to pretty much most of the post herbicides.”

To help farmers with their weed management, Loux says the 2015 Weed Control Guide is now available.

“The Weed Control Guides covers Ohio, Indiana and now Illinois, it’s one publication to have sitting around in your truck or office to keep you updated on current herbicides,” said the OSU Extension weed specialist. “You can get it free online as a .pdf and then you can also buy a better .pdf that has links and things like that online at the OSU Extension e-store.”
