Poultry production up 2% on year

USDA reports U.S. poultry production for October 2014 was 4.145 billion pounds, up 2% from October 2013. Chicken accounted for most of the total at 3.571 billion pounds with turkey at 561.5915 million. The preliminary live weight of all federally inspected birds was 5.470 billion pounds, also 2% more than a year ago.

Young chickens averaged 6.07 pounds per bird, mature chickens averaged 5.95 pounds, and turkeys averaged 30.2 pounds.

Ante-mortem condemnations were 11.7 million pounds or 0.21% of the preliminary live weight and post-mortem condemnations were 40 million pounds or 0.96% of monthly production.

So far this year, U.S. poultry production is 37.611 billion pounds, 1% ahead of the 2013 pace.
