FDA finalizes calorie label rule
Every restaurant chain, grocery store take-out counter, convenience store, amusement park and movie theater would have to post calories for most or all of their menu items under a final rule by the Food and Drug Administration. So would most vending machines.
The FDA says Americans consume about one-third of their calories away from home and this new information “will fill a critical information gap and help consumers make informed and healthful dietary choices.”
Food industry push-back is expected. Already, a contingent of lawmakers says the rules go beyond what was intended in the Affordable Care Act.
