The agriculture industry is looking for an answer to help fight global food insecurity. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack took part in Purdue President Mitch Daniels Presidential Lecture Series in West Ladayette yesterday.

He told attendees there is no one silver bullet approach but – the university system holds part of the answer.  “There’s a need to share research through the global research alliance and the Open Data initiative – universities can plug into that and use research from USDA to come up with innovative solutions in how we produce more with less,” he says. “Less water, less chemicals, less pesticides, and less land.  Science is going to play an integral role and those on university campuses are going to have to help us solve those problems and then make sure those solutions are workable.”

Later today Vilsack will visit with students and faculty on campus to find out what technological advancements they are working on in agriculture.
