COOL Reform asks Congress to act

Programs ICONRetaliation fears from Canada and Mexico are fueling concerns by the COOL Reform Coalition which has written a letter to Congress asking for immediate action on Country of Origin Labeling to prevent Billions of dollars in lost sales.

Given the latest World Trade Organization ruling that the U.S. continues to discriminate against muscle cuts of meat form Canada and Mexico – the group says action is needed now.

John Bode, president and CEO of the Corn Refiners Association, told reporters last week that timing is critical. , “Because of supply chain needs the effects of retaliation hit earlier than official retaliation. And, secondly, even when retaliation goes off the effects continue because it takes a long time to regain markets.”

Bode says U.S. corn refiners process 17% of American corn crops into more than 1-thousand products.

The coalition says “Canada has already issued a preliminary retaliation list targeting a broad spectrum of commodities and manufactured products that will affect every state in the country” and Mexico could be close behind.

The Corn Refiners Association is among 109 groups that signed the letter. Others include: American Feed Industry Association, Cargill, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council, Smithfield, Tyson Foods, Con-Agra.

  • This is why consumers need to begin relying on local farmers and ranchers for their food – big business is totally ignoring the fact that American consumers want to know where their food comes from – every other product we buy is labeled with country of origin – the food needs to be too.
American consumers have spoken – get over it and deal with it!
Let the other countries do what they will – they will back off if we start putting tariffs on their imports!
