CHS remains the nation’s largest co-op

A couple of Minnesota-based cooperatives top the USDA’s Top 100 Cooperatives list.  Based on 2013 revenue, CHS remains number-1 with more than $44 billion in sales.  Fellow St Paul resident Land O’Lakes is second on the list with $14 billion in revenue in 2013.  Dairy Farmers of America based in Kansas City comes in third with $12.8 billion and Bloomington, Illinois’s GROWMARK is fourth with sales exceeding $10 billion.

Iowa has the most cooperatives in the Top 100 with 16, Minnesota has 13.  Nebraska has nine, Illinois and Wisconsin with five each, then California, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri and Ohio, which are all tied with four.

47 of the Top 100 cooperatives handle grain, there are 21 dairy cooperatives on the list.

The top 100 cooperatives also enjoyed a third consecutive year of record sales reporting revenue of $174 billion in 2013, an increase of almost 9 percent over the $166 billion reported in 2012.

Net income (after taxes) remained virtually unchanged from 2012, at $3.5 billion. The previous records for sales and net income were set in 2012.
