Dry weather for now across the Heartland

Across the Corn Belt, dry weather favors a limited return to fieldwork, although below-normal temperatures persist across northern corn and soybean production areas. On October 5, the soybean harvest was at least 20 percentage points behind the respective 5-year state averages in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, with harvest progress in those states ranging from 7 to 25%.

On the Plains, cool conditions persist in the Dakotas, maintaining a slow pace of summer crop maturation and harvesting. Elsewhere, warm, dry weather favors winter wheat planting and emergence, as well as summer crop harvesting. However, limited soil moisture remains a concern with respect to rangeland, pastures, and winter grains across portions of the southern Plains.

In the South, showers linger across southern Florida and the southern Appalachians. Elsewhere, very warm weather is promoting fieldwork, including corn, soybean, cotton, peanut, and rice harvesting.

In the West, showers associated with the remnants of Hurricane Simon are spreading across Arizona and neighboring areas. Elsewhere, dry, unusually warm weather continues to promote fieldwork, including Northwestern winter wheat planting.
