Two more CWD-positive deer found in Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s State Veterinarian Dr. Paul McGraw says a couple of CWD-positive white tailed deer have been found in the state.  One was a two-year-old doe from a small deer farm in Richland County.  The other was a five-year-old buck taken at the Wilderness Whitetails hunting preserve in Marathon County.  Both infections were confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Lab in Ames, Iowa.

The Richland County herd has been quarantined which stops all movement off the farm except to slaughter.  The disposition of the estimated 50 deer remaining on the farm will depend upon the outcome of the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture’s investigation into the infected animal’s history and movement of deer onto and off the property.

The Wilderness Whitetails hunting preserve and its three other locations have been quarantined since December 2013 when the first deer tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. The business was allowed to conduct hunts on the quarantined preserves, because properly handled dead animals leaving the premises do not pose a disease risk.
