Iowa congressman says ‘egg law’ fight is far from over

king-steve-iowaOpponents of California’s egg law are pondering their next move following the rejection of a multi-state lawsuit attempting to overturn that law.

Iowa 4th District Representative Steve King, a vocal critic of California’s egg law and the animal rights groups that support it, says the battle is far from over.

“There’s another litigation path and I’m confident we’ll put together the resources and the plaintiffs—and this time, a list of plaintiffs that there’s no question about their standing to be able to take this thing further through the courts,” King says.

And King tells Brownfield he is prepared to revive his legislation that would prohibit any state from enacting laws dictating how agricultural goods will be produced in another state.

“So we’ve got two avenues—litigate and legislate. I want to be involved in both of them,” King says. “And I’m not going to take my foot off the throttle until we get this completed and save the commerce clause of the Constitution—and livestock.”

The so-called King amendment was attached to the House Farm Bill during markup in the House Agriculture Committee last year but was ultimately dropped from the final Farm Bill Act of 2014.  King blames Senate Ag Committee chair Debbie Stabenow for not allowing the amendment to be discussed by the Farm Bill conference committee.
