Ag groups push for tax extenders

Ag groups continue to push Congress to take action on tax extenders.

Bob McCan, a Texas cattleman and president of the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, says tax exemptions such as the conservation easement tax credit, Section 179 deduction and bonus depreciation are important planning components for cattlemen.

“A lot of these exemptions allow our producers to be able to make plans and make investments that are going to spur economic growth,” says McCan. “December 31st is a pretty hard deadline in the tax code, so all producers need to be able to have time to make these plans and get these things done.”

McCan doubts that Congress will do anything until after the November elections, but he’s hopeful it will take action in the lame duck session.

“Hopefully there’s a little window during November and the end of the year, if we could get this done, that our producers could still make some decisions and be able to do some planning and some investments that will help their operation,” he says.
