Southwest Indiana corn looks great

According to the latest Crop and Weather report 75 percent of Indiana’s corn crop is in good to excellent condition.  Joe Steinkamp farms in southwest Indiana and he says the crop looks great.  “We haven’t hardly hurt for moisture this year,” he says.  “The corn is not fired up from the bottom – meaning we had good moisture and the soybeans that we planted in May is now putting on pods.  We’re pretty excited.”

Steinkamp tells Brownfield there were some challenges early on in the growing season.  “We didn’t hardly get any of our corn planted in April – just about 10 percent of our crop,” he says.  “We’d like to have had more in April.  But the Good Lord has been giving us the Iowa summer we’ve always dreamed of and not very many 90 degree days.  And corn – it likes cooler temperatures.”

What he did get planted in April, he says, should be ready to harvest about the second week of September.
