A lot of hay made in Wisconsin

Cool, dry conditions allowed a lot of fieldwork in Wisconsin last week.  The weekly Crop Progress Report from the National Ag Statistics Service Wisconsin Field Office says as of Sunday, 66 percent of the second crop hay was made, a 22-point jump from a week ago. Topsoil moisture slipped from 74 percent adequate and 25 percent surplus last week to 75 percent adequate and 16 percent surplus this week.  We even have 9 percent in the “short” category.

The Badger State corn crop is 22 percent silking with 76 percent in good to excellent condition.  Silking should be 31 percent by now but the cool days are slowing maturation.

Soybeans are 46 percent blooming with 10 percent setting pods compared to the five-year average of 41 percent blooming and 6 percent setting pods by now.  The beans are rated 76 percent good to excellent condition.

95 percent of the oats are headed, 53 percent turning color and 7 percent is harvested for grain.  91 percent of the winter wheat is turning color.  81 percent of the oats and 73 percent of the wheat in good to excellent condition. Some fungus reported in the wheat in Dane County and rust in the oats in Washington County.
