Lawmakers ask RMA for more planting time

Lawmakers are seeking more time from the USDA for farmers forced into delayed planting by uncooperative weather. Minnesota Congressman Colin Peterson has sent a letter to the head of the USDA’s Risk Management Agency on May 20th asking for more time for farmers in his northwest district to plant because wet weather has prevented many from even getting into their fields “much less actual planting.” Federal crop insurance won’t completely cover corn crops planted after May 25th and for grain and silage after May 31st.  Peterson said his growers “would rather produce a corn crop than collect a prevented planting (insurance) claim.”

North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp has asked the USDA to extend the corn planting deadline for crop insurance concerns of North Dakota farmers.
