House Ag Chair says he has one regret
After years of deliberation, multiple extensions, and countless hours of negotiations – the President is set to sign the Farm Bill tomorrow. But House Ag Committee Chairman Frank Lucas says that long road to get here has been worth it. “As hard as this Farm Bill has been to put together, as difficult as the political environment is in DC, and as rotten as the budget situation has been,” he says. “We in the House and Senate Agriculture Committees managed to overcome that and we managed to craft policy.”
But, Lucas tells Brownfield he does have one regret. “I think this bill reflects such a bold change away from Senator Roberts’ old Freedom to Farm days – such a bold change,” he says. “My one regret is that we did not make this Permanent Law.”
Which means, in five years – they’ll have to tackle it all over again. And as fewer members of Congress have ties to those that produce the food and fiber of this country, he says, it could be more challenging to complete the next time around.
