Cheese production up 2.3% in September

Total cheese production in the U.S. in September was 892 million pounds up 2.3 percent from September of 2012. Italian type cheese output was 4.5 percent higher than a year ago at 385 million pounds while American-type cheese production was 0.3 percent lower at 347 million pounds.

Wisconsin total cheese production in September 229.78 million pounds up 0.7 percent from September of last year. American type cheese production in the Badger State totaled 63.7 million pounds in September down 0.2 percent from a year ago. Cheddar output declined 3.2 percent to 42 million pounds. Italian production was 0.2 percent higher at 117.2 million pounds.

California total cheese production in September 186.9 million pounds up 9.8 percent from a year ago. American-type cheese production was 48.9 million pounds in the Golden State in September up 2.3 percent from a year ago. Cheddar output increased 1.6 percent to 24.4 million pounds. Italian production increased 12.2 percent to 119.4 million pounds.

Rounding out the top-five compared to a year ago:

• Idaho 73 million pounds (-1.7%)
• New York 65.5 million pounds (+5.9%)
• New Mexico 56.8 million pounds (-6.6%)

Butter production totaled 134 million pounds in September, 1.9 percent below September of last year.

Other dairy product production in September compared to a year ago:

• Nonfat dry milk 76.4 million pounds (-9.6%)
• Skim milk powders 54.2 million pounds (+24.3%)
• Dry whey 69.1 million pounds (-6.9%)
• Lactose 86 million pounds (+0.8%)
• Whey protein concentrate 37.2 million pounds (+3.6%)
• Regular ice cream 63.9 million gallons (+6.3%)
• Lowfat ice cream 32.3 million gallons (-8.5%)
• Sherbet 3.02 million gallons (-6.0%)
• Frozen yogurt 5.18 million gallons (+0.7%)
