Genetically engineered foods – To fear or not to fear?

Genetically engineered foods – to fear or not to fear?  At a recent agriculture-hosted event in Missouri on food production, the subject of Genetically Engineered or GMO foods came up.  Jim Thomas, a vegetable farmer and former president of the Missouri Organic Association, says he avoids GM foods, preferring to err on the side of caution.  But, Dr. Kevin Wells, a geneticist with the University of Missouri said there is nothing to fear about these foods – and if there were, scientists would be all over it.

HEALTHY LIVING PROGRAM – GMO fears and science (1:30 mp3)

  • When I visit with veternarians and nutritionist who have done research on the animals eating GMO feeds,I would say use great caution in feeding or using these products .

  • Here is what some of us have concerns about.: the use of pesticides in the genes to sicken any insects that prey on the plants; the removal of gene xx in order to replace it with gene yy and the potential for changes in the genetic make up of the plant or food such that certain nutrients are removed.

I recognize that there are positives that can be obtained by GMO foods, such as the Golden Rice.
But what about the soy and corn that is reported to be genetically modified to be “Round Up Ready”?? What about the studies in Italy and France that indicate some of the genetically modified corn causes disease conditions in lab animals? I understand that in the US no researcher is allowed to do any research on the patented GMO seeds or plants without the approval of the company owning those GMO seeds or plants. So, who are the independent scientists who are able to do research on those GMOs?
