Remote monitoring technology improves safety, security
Joe Hossle, who farms near the town of Emerson in southwest Iowa, is one of the first farmers in Iowa to adopt “smart-farm technology” to improve operations and increase safety and security on his farm.
From his tablet or smart phone, Hossle is able to monitor water and feed levels for livestock, control thermostats and door locks, manage grain bin capacity, check fuel tanks, and view live and recorded video surveillance to make sure his buildings, equipment, crops and livestock stay safe.

According to officials of Iowa LinkedUp, this smart-farm technology is going to be available to farmers in many other parts of the state in the coming months. It’s made possible by local, independent telecommunications companies in Iowa that have been extending fiber-optic cable into rural areas across the state, including to cell towers and wireless service providers, increasing access to reliable and affordable broadband service. These companies are offering farmers across Iowa access to affordable smart-farm technology made possible by an agreement Iowa Network Services has reached with Clear2there, a leading provider of advanced video surveillance, smart-farm, smart-home and smart-business applications. Brownfield’s Ken Anderson attended a demonstration of the smart-farm technology that recently took place on Joe Hossle’s farm. Afterwards, Ken visited with Hossle about what the service means to him.
