Wheat harvest moves through Kansas

Wheat harvest is in full swing in southern Kansas and is starting to move into northern parts of the state.

Activity was reported as far north as Hays in the northwest and Beloit and in north central Kansas over the weekend.

The Kansas wheat crop has been damaged by drought and a late frost and a wide range of yields is expected.  One field near Scott City in western Kansas averaged about 25 bushels per acre, while early yields around Beloit have ranged from 40 to 56 bushels per acre.

Meanwhile, the wheat harvest in Nebraska is still a couple of weeks away.  “We’ll probably be a week later on harvest now—probably somewhere around that July 10th-July 15th area, we’ll begin wheat harvest on the dryland,” says Jerry Kuenning, who farms near Imperial in southwestern Nebraska.  .

As for his corn, “it looks good—we’re off to a good start where we’ve missed the hail.  There’s been some spotted hail, as usual, in our area—but corn’s off to a good start,” Kuenning says.

Most of Kuenning’s corn is under irrigation.
