33% of U.S. winter wheat in good to excellent shape

USDA reports the national winter wheat condition rating dipped again last week as the crop heads towards dormancy.

As of Sunday, 33% of winter wheat is in good to excellent condition, down 1% on the week and 19% on the year, with hard red winter in the worst shape due to continued drought around the Plains. 4%of the total crop is in excellent condition with 29% good, 41% fair, and 26% in poor to very poor shape.

88% of winter wheat has emerged, compared to 91% last year and the five year average of 90%.

89% of this year’s cotton crop is harvested, compared to 90% a year ago and 85% on average.

This is the final scheduled national crop progress of 2012 with the series set to resume April 1, 2013.
