No funding for Kansas biosecurity lab

Construction of a new federal biosecurity lab in Manhattan, Kansas could be in jeopardy.

The Obama Administration’s new budget contains no additional funding for construction of the new National Bio- and Agro-defense Facility at Kansas State University—and the administration says the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will reassess the viability of the project.

Estimated cost of the facility is 650 million dollars. It would replace an aging facility at Plum Island, New York, but New York’s congressional delegation has been pressuring the administration to keep the Plum Island facility open.
Workers have already cleared the Kansas site, and the state has committed itself to authorizing up to $105 million in bonds to help with the project.
