Nebraska state senator blasts HSUS during floor debate

During debate in the Nebraska legislature Wednesday on a bill that would set up a state meat inspection system—and effectively pave the way for a return to horse processing in the state—the chair of the Nebraska legislature’s agriculture committee, Senator Tom Carlson of Holdrege, delivered a scathing attack on the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

Horse processing in the U.S. came to a halt in 2007 when Congress chose to stop funding for federal inspection of horse processing plants.  Carlson says that has led to a big problem with abandoned horses–and he places the blame squarely on HSUS.

Here are excerpts of Carlson’s comments on the floor of the Nebraska Unicameral.

  • The Humane Society of the United States is the largest pro-animal welfare group in this country and arguably the best. The idea that Mr. Carlson fails to see the role of the HSUS is an indication of his lack of education in this matter. Wise up, be on the right side of history before they vote you out!

  • On the contrary Carla Zeigler, Mr. Carlson is most definatly more educated than you will ever be. Just drive around the country and you will see first hand the effects of the ban on horse slaughter. Starved horses that are skin and bone are every where. Mexican slaughter houses stab the horses spinal chord first before they are slaughterd, at least in the U.S. they were bolted before they were slaughtered. The long and packed trip for hours to Mexico must also be a comfortable ride for these animals.

  • We should set up a horse refuge to protect these horses. Senator Carlson does’t like windmills for alternative energy either. He wants to buy his oil from trans Canada. He approves or doesn’t know about the mining process in Canada. The contamination from this mining process is going to change life as we know it on this planet for his children and grandchildren. I don’t think he is so smart.
